What this actually compares. Nothing on this page recognises faces, and nothing is uploaded — your photograph is read by this tab and never leaves it. What is compared is light: the picture is squared off, reduced to a four-by-four grid of brightness values, and matched against the same measurement taken from 220 public-domain paintings in the Art Institute of Chicago collection. So a match means the two pictures are lit and toned alike — which is a real thing to have in common with a stranger from 1640, and is not the same as looking like them.
